According to this theory, two processes are involved inn learning an avoidance response. The first (1) process is classical conditioning of a fear response to a CS. Once this conditioned fear has been established, it then forms the basis of an (2) operant conditioning procedure in which moving away from the CS is negatively reinforced by a reduction in fear.
